RDOD ’08

Yesterday our local all-breed dog club had their 2nd annual Responsible Dog Ownership Day (RDOD) at the county fairgrounds. We had over 20 breeds featured, plus many more that came just for fun.

I was in charge of the club table, so I made a display board with a “Who am I?” guess-the-breed game that included most of the breeds that were at the event. It was a bigger hit that I expected! We gave away dog toys to people who could name all (or most of) the breeds on the board. My sister and her friend helped me with the club area, talking to people and giving them the goodie-bags that we and a couple of 4H-er helpers assembled that morning.
There were various activities that went on throughout the course of the day…

“Dancing with your dog” demonstrations…
“Meet the Breed” booths and the “Papillon Parade”…
A “Best-Dressed” contest…

And demonstrations/presentations by the local police K-9 units…

Our dog club donated a check to one of the newest K-9 units, Officer Joe and his K-9 partner, Ajax, for a bullet-proof vest for Ajax. The vests are custom made and hand stitched to fit each individual dog, so the end product is quite pricey and the sheriff’s department didn’t have enough money in their budget to provide one for Ajax.
There were also flyball demonstrations, a Parade of Breeds, Canine Good Citizen certification tests, vendors… and some other activities that I can’t remember right now. :)

By the end of the day, everyone was pretty much dead on their feet. We had started setting up at 7am and wrapped up around 545pm. It was a long day, but definitely worth all of the time and effort that we put into it. My mom and I took our Toller pups to the event to show them off and to socialize them. They were amazingly well-behaved, impressing us and everyone else. (They’re only 8 months old!)
It is a relief to be finished with RDOD stuff… I could have easily gone to bed at 8pm last night (but didn’t). Now it is time to start planning for the dog show in March!

In other news… looks like JP and I are shooting another wedding at the end of December! This one is only a couple of hours away, as opposed to the one in Oregon that took many hours to drive to.
